Gain advanced expertise in AI to excel in creative industries

The Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Artificial Intelligence and Creative Practice explores the connection between artificial intelligence and contemporary creative practice through collaborative, practice-led study.

Through structured studio-based group projects, the programme engages with artificial intelligence as both a technical system and a creative medium, delving into how human-machine interactions redefine the boundaries of authorship, originality, ethics, and cultural significance.

A curriculum that builds, prototypes and critiques

60 credits

4 courses

The Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) is the first stage of the Artificial Intelligence and Creative Practice programme. Over eight months, you’ll explore AI as a creative medium, developing practical skills alongside a critical understanding of its possibilities, limits and cultural impact.

You’ll experiment with generative tools such as diffusion models, GANs and transformers, while examining their ethical and socio-economic implications. Working collaboratively, you’ll prototype and refine creative ideas from early experimentation to MVPs.

Through studio-based projects and theoretical inquiry, you’ll challenge traditional ideas of authorship and creativity, positioning AI as a creative partner. By the end, you’ll have built technical fluency, collaborative experience and conceptual depth — ready to progress or apply your skills professionally.

Required Artificial Intelligence and Creative Practice PGCert courses

This module introduces the creative, technical and critical dimensions of AI-generated art. You’ll experiment with generative models like diffusion models, GANs and transformers while examining ethical and socio-economic implications. Assessment is a reflective blog demonstrating critical thinking and practical experimentation.
This module focuses on collaborative research and prototyping methods in Creative AI. You’ll learn to work collectively, document processes and design iterative prototypes from early experimentation to MVPs. Assessment is a group portfolio demonstrating collaborative research, and social and artistic considerations.
This module prepares you to design intermedial AI-driven creative projects. You’ll examine Creative AI practices through theoretical frameworks while experimenting across multiple tools and media. Assessment is a collaborative group or paired project proposal outlining your research context, methodology, and technical approach.
This module explores Creative AI through intermedial and transdisciplinary approaches. You’ll investigate human–machine learning relationships and create AI-informed works for a public symposium. Assessment combines a group symposium component (70%) with an individual reflective report (30%).

Please note that occasionally we may make changes to our programme curriculum. You may not always study modules in the order they are listed here.

Professional pathways in creative AI

Graduates of Artificial Intelligence and Creative Practice work across roles in creative, media, design, and technology-focused sectors where artificial intelligence tools are integrated into production and design processes, including advertising, digital arts, film, games, and immersive media.

The programme also provides qualifications relevant to pursuing further study in artificial intelligence and creative practice.

Value of a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert)

A Postgraduate Certificate is ideal if you want to gain specialist knowledge without committing to a full master’s degree. It allows you to build advanced, industry-relevant skills in a shorter time frame – helping you move forward while balancing work, finances and personal commitments:

  • Focus on what matters most – study targeted modules that develop the skills you need.
  • Complete in less time – achieve a recognised postgraduate qualification in a shorter study period.
  • Lower overall cost – study fewer credits than a full master’s, reducing your financial investment.
  • Apply your learning immediately – gain practical, career-focused skills you can use straight away.
  • Progress when you’re ready – use your PGCert as a stepping stone to a Postgraduate Diploma or full master’s in the future.
  • Earn a recognised Level 7 qualification – strengthen your CV and professional profile with a respected postgraduate award.

Programme outcomes

Upon completion, you’ll be able to apply AI within creative practice and work with AI models and generative systems, while developing the analytical skills required to use AI responsibly and creatively.
