A history of bold ideas

Goldsmiths, University of London was founded in 1891 when the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths reopened a technical and recreative institute in New Cross. In 1904–05, the Company transferred to the University of London, where it became Goldsmiths’ College. Initially focused on teacher training and community engagement, Goldsmiths expanded throughout the 20th century into a broad, research-led institution with strong cultural and creative roots. In 2026, following 120 years as a leading university, Goldsmiths launched its first online courses in Technology, Psychology, and Children’s Literature.
